Some authors argue that the European powers anticipated a limited war in the Balkans, but the alliance system caused the situation to escalate into a world war. Could Austria-Hungary and Serbia have settled their own differences? We often hear about the diplomatic "blank check" that Imperial Germany issued Austria-Hungary in July 1914, but Imperial Russia was not obligated to come to Serbia's aid. How about the Niall Ferguson thesis involving British war guilt?
